Game Development Shortcuts: Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot and the Art Tools
The shortcuts to learn first in Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot, and in GameMaker, Roblox Studio, Blender and Aseprite — side by side for Mac and Windows, from each tool's own documentation.
A game is made in an engine and in the tools around it: a 3D modeller, a pixel-art editor, a texturing app. Each has its own keys, and a day of game development moves between several of them. The keys worth learning first are the ones every edit passes through: select, transform, focus and play.

The transform keys travel well between Unity, Unreal and Godot; the rest does not. The comparisons list every key of both engines and lead with the ones that do something else.
FAQ
- What are the most useful Unity shortcuts?
- W, E and R switch between the move, rotate and scale tools, F frames the selection in the Scene view, and Ctrl+D (⌘D on a Mac) duplicates it.
- What are the Unreal Engine viewport controls?
- Hold the right mouse button and use W, A, S and D to fly. Alt with the left button orbits, with the right it dollies, with the middle it pans; F focuses the selection.
- How do I run a scene in Godot?
- F6 runs the scene open in the editor and F5 the whole project; on a Mac, ⌘R and ⌘B.
- Where do these shortcuts come from?
- From each tool's official documentation. Every app page lists its sources and the date its shortcuts were last checked.
